-- Chinese technology companies have recently drawn increased attention on the international stage. Huawei introduced the "Tao (τ) Law," proposing a new framework for semiconductor development, while Zhangxue Motorcycle secured five consecutive titles in the Superbike World Championship with its self-developed intelligent electronic control system. From advances in chip technology to breakthroughs in high-end manufacturing, Chinese companies are expanding their presence across multiple industries. In the sleep technology sector, a similar effort is taking shape as Chinese mattress maker Sleemon Healthy Sleep Technology Co., Ltd. participates in international standard-setting discussions, seeking to contribute to the development of global standards for smart furniture and marking another step in the transition of Chinese companies from adopters to contributors of international rules.
Behind this development is a rapidly expanding global sleep economy market where industry standards have lagged behind growth. According to data from QYResearch and other institutions, the global sleep economy market reached $475.68 billion in 2025. The sleep technology device market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18.5%, reaching $134.7 billion by 2034. However, the absence of comprehensive international standards has emerged as a challenge for the sector. Many products marketed as "smart" offer only basic adjustable functions while being promoted as advanced AI-enabled technologies. At the same time, highly sensitive biometric data collected by smart mattresses, including heart rate and brainwave information, lack unified international data security standards, raising concerns over privacy protection. Industry participants also cite low barriers to entry and inconsistent product quality as issues affecting market development.
As the industry seeks greater standardization, Sleemon, which has been long involved in sleep technology research and standards development, participated as the sole Chinese industry representative at the 20th Plenary Meeting of ISO/TC 136. During the conference, Lu Chenxi, deputy director of the Sleemon Sleep Research Institute, delivered a presentation titled "Standardizing The Intelligent Matress- Bridging Furniture, Health, and Intelligence" ,outlining developments in smart mattresses based on air-spring technology and discussing proposals for future international standards. The presentation contributed to discussions that may inform future revisions and development of ISO standards. During the meeting, proposals to revise ISO 19833:2018 and international standards related to the flammability performance of upholstered furniture were recognized by member countries and incorporated into conference resolutions. A proposal from the Chinse representative to explore international standards for smart furniture independent of the IEC framework also received positive responses from international experts. Sleemon Co-President Dong Zhanlue held discussions with ISO/TC 136 Chairperson Nicola Franceschi and experts from multiple countries, including efforts to promote hosting the next in-person standards meeting in China. These developments indicate growing international engagement with China's smart mattress technologies and standards proposals within the furniture sector.

From semiconductors and advanced manufacturing to sleep technology, Chinese companies are increasingly pursuing progress in both technology development and standards participation across a range of emerging industries. The trend reflects a broader shift in global industrial standard-setting toward a more diverse and collaborative model involving a wider range of participants. Looking ahead, the development of more inclusive international standards frameworks and greater integration of technological achievements from different countries are likely to remain important issues for global industry.
