-- On the evening of June 7 local time, the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona was filled with the gentle resonance of strings and flowing melodies. As the opening event of the Harbin Symphony Orchestra’s performance tour in Spain, the “A Date with Harbin” Chamber Music Exchange Concert was warmly presented, setting the stage for the upcoming performance of the symphonic work Ode to Civilization, which will be held in Madrid on June 9. The event was jointly hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Spain and the Harbin Municipal Government, with media support provided by Harbin Daily. June 10 marks the United Nations International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, and this concert tour has been organized to mark the occasion and promote mutual learning and cultural exchange between China and Spain.

The evening’s program was presented in an intimate chamber music format, featuring violin and string ensemble performances that brought Chinese melodies to life through Western instruments. Like a finely crafted piece of porcelain, the concert unfolded with warmth, elegance, and subtle artistry, inviting reflection and appreciation. The repertoire ranged from the classical grace of Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major to the lyrical beauty of the violin concerto The Butterfly Lovers, one of China’s most beloved musical masterpieces. Particularly captivating were selections from Bao Yuankai’s Chinese Sights and Sounds, including Purple Bamboo Melody, Yangliuqing, Jasmine Flower, and Guessing Tune. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese folk songs, these works blended seamlessly with the delicate textures of Western strings. Like softly painted cloud motifs on blue-and-white porcelain, the music gradually revealed a rich sonic landscape imbued with the distinctive charm of Chinese culture. The encore performances, Frontier Spring Water Clear and Pure and On Sun Island, flowed with the freshness of a mountain stream, conveying the sincerity and warmth of Harbin, China, to audiences in Barcelona.

Lasting approximately 65 minutes, the concert employed the refined textures and expressive range of Western instruments to showcase the lyrical elegance, subtlety, and emotional depth of Chinese musical works. Set within the Joan Miró Foundation, a venue renowned for its modernist artistic atmosphere, the performance created a unique dialogue between Eastern musical traditions and Western visual art. In this setting, music became a vivid expression of cultural exchange and dialogue among civilizations. The concert attracted members of Barcelona’s cultural community, music enthusiasts, and representatives of the local Chinese community. Audience response was enthusiastic throughout the evening. When the familiar melody of Jasmine Flower filled the hall, many listeners instinctively swayed to the rhythm or softly hummed along. Selections from Spanish dance music also resonated strongly with local audiences, earning warm and sustained applause.

This intimate yet elegant chamber concert of Chinese musical works was like a piece of living porcelain, gracefully bringing the refined beauty of Chinese culture to the stage in Barcelona. It not only built momentum for the upcoming performance of Ode to Civilization, but also added a warm and sophisticated touch to the ongoing dialogue between Chinese and Western civilizations.
