Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration Launches Low-Carbon Shuttle Service Linking Key Coastal Destinations

Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration has announced the introduction of the “Taiwan Tourist Shuttle – Dapeng Bay–Liuqiu Line,” developed in collaboration with the Taiwan Tourism Administration to promote sustainable travel and support low-carbon transportation initiatives. The service connects major access points in Donggang, Pingtung, linking key destinations in the Dapeng Bay area with transportation hubs, cultural landmarks, and natural attractions. The Dapeng Bay–Liuqiu Line provides a direct link to Taiwan’s only single-inlet lagoon, a distinctive geographical feature known for its ecological and cultural significance. The route allows travelers to reach the harbor area and surrounding attractions without reliance on private vehicles, thereby reducing carbon emissions and supporting the protection of the coastal environment. After arriving by shuttle, visitors can continue their journey by bicycle or on foot, making use of dedicated cycling paths and walking trails that connect local markets, historical sites, and waterfront areas. Cultural and heritage attractions along the route include Donglong Temple, a center of regional maritime traditions, and the King Boat Cultural Museum, which preserves and presents the history of the King Boat Ceremony. This triennial event is recognized for its connection to the Ying Wang Peace Festival, a ritual deeply embedded in the local community’s history and beliefs. The shuttle service makes these locations more accessible to both domestic and international visitors, ensuring cultural heritage remains connected to contemporary tourism infrastructure. The transportation line also supports access to Donggang’s harbor markets, including Huaqiao Market, known as Taiwan’s largest black tuna trading hub. The market is an important site for understanding the relationship between local livelihoods and marine resources, as well as for experiencing regional culinary traditions. Nearby eateries, such as Yuxingkou Eatery , DONG DA XING Seafood and Little Heaven Kitchen, offer dishes that reflect the area’s connection to the sea. By connecting these culinary destinations with low-carbon public transport, the initiative aims to integrate local economic activity into sustainable travel frameworks. In addition to cultural and culinary experiences, the Dapeng Bay–Liuqiu Line enables environmentally conscious access to natural attractions. Visitors can engage in lagoon-based activities such as mangrove kayaking and birdwatching, observing seasonal migratory species and coastal ecosystems without increasing traffic congestion or environmental disturbance. The route also facilitates attendance at events such as the weekend Dapeng Bay Bridge opening show, which offers a view of the lagoon and its surroundings, and visits to Taiwan’s first ocean chapel, located along the waterfront. By connecting multiple types of attractions—cultural, ecological, and recreational—through a single low-emission transport option, the Dapeng Bay–Liuqiu Line reflects a coordinated approach to sustainable destination management. The integration of public transport with cycling and walking routes provides an alternative to traditional sightseeing models, aligning tourism activity with environmental stewardship goals. The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration and Taiwan Tourism Administration have positioned the service as a key component of regional mobility planning, ensuring that tourism development in the Dapeng Bay area progresses in balance with cultural preservation and ecological protection.
