Australian School of Self-Defence has expanded enrolment in response to rising personal safety concerns across Sydney. According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, reported sexual assault in NSW increased by 107.2% over the ten years to June 2024. The school's Hornsby centre and Sydney branches are positioned as accessible entry points for residents seeking practical, non-sport-based self-defence skills.
The program is built around the school's S.A.F.E. framework: Self-Protection, Anti-Bullying, Fun & Fitness, and Empowerment. Rather than point-sparring or competition rules, training draws on leverage-based techniques that allow smaller or less experienced individuals to control and escape from larger attackers. Classes also incorporate verbal boundary-setting and situational awareness, intended to help students de-escalate confrontations before physical defence becomes necessary.
Training is structured by age and goal rather than a single class format, a center spokesperson said. Adult sessions combine self-protection training with fitness conditioning, while kids' and teen classes focus on discipline, confidence, and anti-bullying skills including strategies for handling peer pressure. Family classes are designed for joint participation, while a low-impact senior program emphasizes balance, longevity, and situational awareness. An advanced track is also available for practitioners with prior martial arts experience.
Instruction is led by Grandmaster John Gill, an 8th Dan Black Belt in both Hapkido and Taekwondo with more than 40 years of teaching experience and 29 world championship titles. Gill has taught self-defence in Sydney schools since 1985 and has previously delivered self-defence training internationally, including a program commissioned by the Australian Government.
Enrolment is open at the school's main Hornsby centre and at branch locations in Beacon Hill, Gordon, Lane Cove, Mosman, Neutral Bay, and Pymble. New students can claim a $47 introductory pass covering 30 days of unlimited classes at any branch, along with access to the school's S.A.F.E. seminars, a center spokesperson said.
