California Teen PHP/Day Program for Anxiety & Depression: Services Expanded

Share this news:

California Teen Center has expanded its Yuba City-based partial hospitalization program, offering adolescents ages 12-17 a structured daytime treatment option for anxiety, depression, and related behavioral health conditions — without requiring inpatient hospitalization.

-- California Teen Center's expanded partial hospitalization program (PHP) in Yuba City is designed to fill that gap, providing adolescents ages 12-17 with intensive, structured daytime mental health treatment for anxiety, depression, and related behavioral health challenges. The program allows teens to return home each evening and remain actively connected to their families throughout the course of treatment.

According to the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, approximately 45% of California adolescents ages 12-17 report experiencing mental health difficulties, with nearly a third experiencing serious psychological distress that can interfere with academic and social functioning. The figures point to a significant unmet need for structured, accessible treatment options for families across the state.

"Parents often reach a point where weekly therapy no longer provides enough support, but inpatient treatment may not be clinically necessary," a California Teen Center spokesperson said. "Our PHP/day program offers intensive daytime care while allowing teens to return home each evening and continue benefiting from family involvement throughout treatment."

The PHP operates five days a week, typically from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., combining individual therapy, process groups, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training, psychoeducation, expressive therapies, family therapy, psychiatric medication management, and academic support. The program is also appropriate for teens transitioning from psychiatric hospitalization or those whose mental health symptoms have significantly affected their daily functioning.

California Teen Center is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and accredited by The Joint Commission. In addition to its PHP, the center offers teen intensive outpatient programs (IOP), outpatient therapy, step-down support, and virtual IOP for eligible families throughout California. The organization works with major insurance providers, including Anthem, Blue Shield of California, Carelon, and Aetna, and offers insurance verification assistance.
